So today we're visiting a bit of a different one than our usual sites, but thought we'd show it off anyway as it's an interesting location. There doesn't seem to be many videos on this place and the ones we have seen have been incorrectly described, people seem to think that this was a "bear cave" at what was Rosherville Gardens. It is in fact a Hermit Cave. During the Victorian period Rosherville Gardens was a pleasure gardens and zoological society on the outskirts of Gravesend and Northfleet. It was a very popular tourist destination with people from London. Within the gardens was a Hermit cave carved into the chalk face that had a Grotto protruding from the cliff face. Unlike most Hermits of the time it would have most likely been a paid actor as apposed to a "live in" Hermit. You can see where it was hand carved by the lines in the walls, you can also see where the Hermit had carved little candle holders to light the back of the cave. The Hermit Cave was situated close to the natural caves that were within the gardens (which were later converted and extended to make the A.E.I Cableworks / W.T Henley Air Raid Shelter complex) which would have made the Hermit cave look more natural and added to the aesthetic. We hope you enjoy.
