Blurred shapes of leaves brushed through the room, tracing through the cracks in the floor. Mayla watched from her chair. Without the aid of lamplight to continue reading the book in her hands, she picked absently at a loose thread in the binding. If the thread would simply come out far enough, maybe she could finally tear it away. Or maybe she could keep pulling, to see how far it would unravel. She looked down at the book. The ink of some author tangled its way through every page, leaving no space to fill. It was not quite mysterious, not quite her own, but one she was willing to pick up. Uninspired, she stood, disrupting the dappled light in the room with shapes larger than herself. No sound beckoned her toward the door, but she moved as if pulled by a tow. And as she crossed that threshold, in the hall she saw a light.
