A student deported to Honduras while attempting to fly home to Texas for Thanksgiving spoke alongside her attorney and advocates on Friday, as she works to come back to the United States to continue her education. 20-year-old Any Lucia Lopez Belloza will not be taking a flight back to Texas after a filing in federal court revealed immigration officials' intention to detain and deport her again upon return. The Babson College student was detained by immigration officials in November as she attempted to fly from Boston to her family in Austin. She was then flown to Honduras, despite a federal court in Massachusetts ordering the government not to deport her. U.S. attorneys later apologized for what they described as a “mistake,” while asserting that the court did not have jurisdiction over the case, as Lopez Belloza had already left the state at the time of the order. Since then, a legal back-and-forth has ensued, with a federal judge ordering Lopez Belloza’s return to the United States. On Thursday, court filings revealed U.S. authorities planned to fly the student back to Texas on Friday afternoon to comply with the order. A separate filing, however, revealed federal immigration agents’ intention to “effectuate Petitioner’s final order of removal after she is returned,” suggesting she would be detained and deported in Texas upon arrival. "Yesterday was a rollercoaster of emotion,” Lopez Belloza said during a press call on Friday. “I was excited when I heard there was a flight that would take me back home.” She said that excitement quickly dwindled after learning of the possibility of returning just to be deported again. "I am angry because this should not happen to anyone regardless of immigration status,” she said. “I am sad because no one should ever have to feel this powerless." Her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, slammed government officials over their actions following their apology for their “mistake” in federal court. "This is the hollowest apology of my lifetime. You say you're sorry and you make it right. You don't continue to torment people," Pomerleau said. In a statement to CBS Austin on Friday, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security wrote: Complying with a court order, ICE attempted to facilitate Any Lopez-Belloza’s return back to the United States—but she failed to appear for her pre-arranged flight. ICE made multiple attempts to reach out to her with no response. For operational security purposes, ICE does not disclose future law enforcement operations. On November 20, CBP arrested Any Lopez-Belloza, an illegal alien from Honduras, as she was attempting to board a flight at Boston Logan International Airport. This illegal alien entered the country in 2014 and an immigration judge issued her a final order removal in 2015, over a decade ago. She was removed to Honduras. The court order to stop her removal was issued AFTER she was already removed. She received full due process including a final order of removal from a judge. Pomerleau confirmed that Lopez Belloza would not be boarding a flight back to the United States on Friday afternoon, calling the flight back to the country a “charade.” “She's accomplished more in life than most people ever will, regardless of where they were born. She has a bright future ahead of her, and I made a promise to her I'm not stopping until she's back here, but she's not coming back in handcuffs,” he said.
