My First Overland Trip in a 25-Year-Old Land Rover Defender (2,200 km to England)

After a week of repairs and maintenance in Fuengirola, Spain, it was finally time to put my 2001 Land Rover Defender TD5 to the test on its first real overland journey. With storms rolling across southern Spain and a tight timeline to leave the Schengen Area, we waited for a break in the weather before beginning a 2,200 km (1,370 mile) road trip from Gibraltar to Dover, England. The challenge? This newly purchased Defender still had issues — including no working windshield wipers and a driveshaft I wasn’t completely confident in. But sometimes the only way to know what a vehicle is capable of… is to hit the road. In this episode I begin my first long-distance trip in the Land Rover, crossing Spain and France before reaching the White Cliffs of Dover, where parts and experienced Defender mechanics are far easier to find. Along the way we also explore historic Dover Castle, WWII tunnels used during Operation Dynamo and Dunkirk, and an incredible tank museum before my solo journey continues north toward Scotland and beyond.
