Inside Purdue Engineering is a series that features traditions of schools, programs and organizations within the College of Engineering. The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) traces its roots to West Lafayette, Indiana, and Purdue University in the early 1970s. Purdue students Ed Barnette and Fred Cooper, along with advisor Arthur Bond, created a study group for Black engineering students in 1971 that was recognized on campus as the Black Society of Engineers. Three years later, a group of engineering students from Chicago and others moved the organization forward, pushing toward a national organization. In April 1975, Purdue hosted students from across the country and Canada and effectively solidified the National Society of Black Engineers. Now, the national student-run organization has more than 24,000 members and 600 chapters worldwide. About 200 members are in the Purdue "mother chapter," which builds itself around the #NSBE mission: to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers that excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact the community. Other trailblazers include Amelia Earhart, seven National Medal of Technology and Innovation recipients, and nine National Academy of Inventors Fellows. Our agricultural and biological engineering programs ranked No. 1 for more than a decade, and the College houses the world’s largest academic propulsion lab and the nation’s first all-digital nuclear reactor. #purdue #purdueengineering #engineering
