[MANUALLY CAPTIONED FOR ACCURACY[ In this conversation between Alison Reiheld and Barrett Emerick, Emerick talks about the duties we owe to those we love when we think they are morally wrong. Should we try to change their minds? Should we keep them in our lives? Should we cut them off? What obligations are created by loving relationships? Must we help those we love to become better people? How long, how hard, must we try? What are the ethics of moral disagreement within close personal relationships--friends, family, and even romantic partners? Emerick explored these issues in his 2016 article "Love and Resistance: Moral Solidarity in the Face of Perceptual Failure" (available open access on the internet), and in this interview he discusses his ongoing work on what love requires, including agape--"brotherly love", love for others who are, like us, moral agents. Reiheld and Emerick met on Zoom for this friendly exchange the day after Thanksgiving, 2020.
