On Monday, as Ram Lalla's consecration ceremony was underway in Ayodhya, 63-year-old actor Harish Mehta collapsed while portraying Hanuman during a Ramayana play in Bhiwani, Haryana. Mehta fell at the feet of the child actor playing Ram. The audience applauded, thinking it was part of the act. Mehta was later declared dead, likely of a heart attack, at a hospital. Mehta was a retired engineer who had been passionately playing Hanuman in Ramlilas for 25 years. On days he played Hanuman, he fasted and did spiritual practices. During the play, Mehta acted out a scene bowing at Ram's feet when he suddenly collapsed. The organizers initially thought he was prolonging the act due to devotion. Video shows Mehta dressed as Hanuman, devoutly swinging before falling down at Ram's feet. The audience continues clapping, unaware. Mehta remained motionless as another actor urged him to get up.
