Weather officials say intense snowfall could hit areas along the Sea of Japan and elsewhere over the weekend. Many locations have already seen heavy snow accumulation in recent days. Japan Meteorological Agency official Osada Eiji said: “Parts of northern to western Japan have already seen record snow accumulation. And there is a possibility that more snow could pile up.” People’s lives have already been affected by the heavy snow. In Aomori City in northern Japan, traffic was backed up for more than 500 meters during the Thursday morning commute. A commuter said: “I did not think it would be this bad. I won’t make it to work on time, and I’ve already called to say I’ll be late.” Road conditions worsened in some parts of the city because temperatures rose and the snow melted. A woman says she has not been able to get her car out since last Sunday. She said: “My mother, who is over 90, lives nearby, but I can’t take her anywhere. Our lives are being affected.” There has been a growing number of accidents involving snow removal. A man in his 60s was found buried in snow on Thursday in Odate City in Akita Prefecture. He was later confirmed dead. He had been seen at ground level trying to remove snow from a roof using what appeared to be a stick. He was working alone. Officials say that at least 42 people have died across Japan since January 20 due to harsh winter conditions and heavy snowfall. Officials in Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture have set up a structure called a “snow tunnel.” It provides residents with a path from their front doors to the street. Officials say the structure can withstand snow accumulation of about four meters. A man said, “We are getting record snowfall this year, so the tunnel is a big help.” Weather officials say blizzards are hitting parts of Hokkaido. This could create whiteout conditions in which visibility drops to zero. The officials say snow could also fall and accumulate in Pacific-side areas that usually see little snow, such as Tokyo’s 23 wards and other parts of southern Kanto. East Japan Railway is warning of possible service suspensions or major delays in the greater Tokyo area. It is urging people to stay updated on the latest information.
