The laws of physics seem to exhibit symmetry. Reflections in a mirror do not change the properties of pendula and projectiles. But do we see the mirror image actually occurring in our universe when it comes to other forces, like the Weak Nuclear Force? The answer is no! In 1956, Chien S. Wu at Columbia U performed an experiment that flipped the universe in a mirror. By an incredibly painstaking process of chilling nucleons to a hair above absolute zero temperature, then reversing the spin by flipping over the spin of Cobalt-60 nuclei, she flipped the direction that most of the electrons come out of! The mirror image universe isn't real! This showed that not the electron, but the other particle emitted during weak radioactive decay, the neutrino, which carries spin, just like the photon. However, unlike photons, neutrinos only spin one way --always left-handed. Since angular momentum must be conserved, the direction the electrons are emitted was forced upon us as well. This phenomenal discovery led to Nobel Prizes...but not for Madame Wu. Find out more in this video! Teachers: get your free resource kit exploring concepts related to C.S.
