Located along the Pliny Mountain Range, Mount Waumbek is the 46th tallest mountain in the state of New Hampshire, and although the summit is completely wooded with no views, the hike itself takes you through one of the most enchanted forests in the Granite State. No matter the season, Mt. Waumbek is a rather easy/moderate hike thanks to the gradual nature of the Starr King Trail which begins in the town of Jefferson, NH along U.S. Route 2. The Starr King Trail is the most common route taken, and the trail is named after Mount Starr King (3,907 ft.) which the trail passes over just a half mile before reaching Waumbek’s summit. The summit of Starr King is a great place to rest and grab a snack, some water, and to take in the partial view to the south of the Presidential Mountain Range. The Starr King Trail begins in a thinly wooded, deciduous forest before it abruptly turns left at about 1.5 miles and plunges into a magical world of evergreen trees that span the rest of the way to the summit. Mt. Waumbek is also notorious for its scavenging grey jays; a bird that is known to boldly approach hikers for food. If you hold out your hand with food, you will almost always be greeted with a hungry grey jay! If someone is just beginning to hike the NH 4,000 footers, then Mt. Waumbek is a great mountain to start on. Even in winter, as seen in this video, microspikes are not absolutely needed (although I did put them on and use them for the descent). As long as you are not the first one to hike the Starr King Trail after a snowfall, you will not need snowshoes either.
