Co-founder and CEO Hu Debo is a graduate of KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and subsequently worked for Huawei in Europe. He partnered with Yang Hua to establish Shanghai Kepler Exploration Robot Co., Ltd. in 2023, named after the super Earth exoplanet. The company focuses on the research and development, production and application of general humanoid robots, saying its mission is to replace blue-collar workers in manufacturing, warehousing logistics, inspections, security patrols, high-risk operations, commercial services, scientific research and education. Kepler is a prominent company in Zhangjiang Robotics Valley, an industrial park unveiled in 2020 and fully supported by the Pudong District and Shanghai government. Hu stated, "Except for a few components such as computing chips sourced from foreign manufacturers, the rest are either developed by us or have been successfully localized." Kepler announced its K2 humanoid robot in October 2024, developed after conducting research with over 50 targeted customers. It measures 178 cm in height, weighs 85 kg and features a 40 DOF in whole body control. K2 is equipped with an advanced visual positioning and path planning system that swiftly and accurately calculates movement paths. Kepler's proprietary planetary actuator, combining a roller screw, driver, reducer, and encoder, surpasses ordinary motors in positioning accuracy, explosive power, and rapid response. The company’s priority in 2025 is mass production of its humanoid robots, and it will not focus on attention-grabbing stunts like backflips.
