Hi! My name is Rick Hall. I am the founder of a company called IGNITE, based in Nottingham, England. We try to get more creativity in science lessons in schools. I have been doing some experiment at the IUCAA Science Center in Pune, India. I do a lot of experiments with children to do with their senses. Today’s experiment is about our sense of hearing and how sound actually reaches our ears. This is an experiment which anyone can do at home using simple everyday materials. I am going to use a metal coat hanger. I have tied two pieces of string to the hanger. I hold the strings on the top and tap the hanger with a cycle spoke. The sound which comes is quite dull. Now I have r shelf from the fridge. Then I take a piece of string and tie two loops on its ends such that my index fingers can go in. Then I hang the shelf with the string. It is quite easy to do that. On banging the shelf with a spoon – a dull sound comes out. Then I ask a girl to put the loops of thread in her index fingers and put the fingers in both her ears and lean a little forward. Once again I will bang the shelf with the spoon. Does she hear a dull sound? No her face tells us that it was a loud booming sound! This is because sound travels so much better through the strings and your fingers into your ears, than it does through the air.
