On November 1st & 2nd, 2021 my buddy, JC and I climbed Snow Mountain (Xueshan). It is the second tallest peak in Taiwan (3886m) located in SheiPa National Park. The drive took over five hours from Changhua. I rented a Nissan Xtrail ($NT4000) so that my wife still had a vehicle to use while I was away playing in the mountains! It was difficult to receive a permit this year due to COVID restrictions, but luckily, we were granted official permission after being on a waiting list just five days before our climb. (Thanks to JC for repeatedly applying to Jade and Snow Mountains simultaneously). The trailhead is located in beautiful Wuling Farm, where you show your mountain permit (no need for a police permit anymore). The hike is rated a 4/6 (with six being the easiest), and is defined as a "challenging mountain hike" due to the length, gradient, altitude, and the fact that there are some rock scrambles, but I wouldn't call it particularly dangerous if you take it slow. A footpath is usually clearly defined or marked. Many people stay two nights instead of one to acclimatize, and that's probably a good idea if you have a far drive. Our plan was to just rest at the Qika Cabin and stay the night at the 369 Cabin, higher up on the trail (7.1 km). Originally, we had intended to get up at 2am to attempt the summit for sunrise, but we decided to add two (much needed) hours of sleep and wake up at 4am. This turned out to be a good idea, as we timed it for the sunrise just before entering the Black Forest. The Sea of Clouds is simply breathtaking! It was steep going in parts...but no problem for the endemic Taiwan Serow (capricornis swinhoei), a bovid with small horns (unfortunately no video footage). We saw two of them on our trip, easily navigating the steep slopes! Seeing these unique animals was an excuse for a rest. At times, we felt like we had bit off more than we could chew in hiking 18 hours and skipping a night! However, upon returning, I was glad to be back in my own bed (and this was thanks to splitting up the driving with JC). We carried about 10kg worth of gear in our packs. Note: You need to bring your own sleeping bag and mat. Most of my gear can be seen in this video and please comment if you have any questions. About the only gear I didn't mention in the video was my Hoka Mid Speedgoat trail shoes, which worked out fine. In fact, I was glad to have the Gortex when crossing a mountain spring! Speaking of water, we each brought close to three liters and had to boil more at the 369 cabin after summiting. Here is a list of my food: Before the hike, I wolfed down half of a cheese sandwich with pickles and olives. Snacks included nuts and dried fruit, two energy bars, a few chocolates, and a can of Red Bull (for the summit!). Dinner was instant noodles and a freeze dried rice dinner (which I didn't finish). For breakfast we both ate two hard-boiled eggs with black salt. We had Starbucks Cappuccino packets after returning to the 369 Cabin after the summit. In addition, when hungry, I had a tunafish "fantuan" (rice dumpling), and half a PB&J sandwich. I ended up with a tangerine and a sweet bread roll left over, the latter of which I gave to JC. In the video, we talk about the effects of altitude. The first night I had a headache, and was actually contemplating giving up the climb! However, with the help if JC's sleeping pill, I felt much better after getting some shut-eye! After the summit, it was JC's turn to feel ill, but with a coffee, a snack, and a bit of rest, he was good to go! We got back to the car before sundown on Tuesday and got home safety after a harrowing drive in rain and fog though Hehuan. Lastly, in the video JC belts out Van Morrison's 1967 single "Brown Eyed Girl" as I strum the five chords on my mini Yamaha guitar! Enjoy! Please "like" and sub for more adventures in Taiwan!
