A group of migrants detained at a Polish border guard post on September 27th did not want to claim asylum in Poland and were returned to where they had crossed from Belarus, a spokeswoman has stated. International organisations against borders and members of Poland’s left-wing opposition parties have criticized the decision to return them to Belarus. VOICE OVER The group of around 20 adults and children comprising several families did not want to apply for asylum in Poland and wanted to apply in Germany, the border guard's spokeswoman Anna Michalska said. Michalska said the group detained at a border guard station in Michalowo were assessed for medical attention and were later returned to the place where they crossed from Belarus. She did not specify when they were returned. 3. (SOUNDBITE) (Polish) POLISH BORDER GUARD SPOKESWOMAN, ANNA MICHALSKA, SAYING: "The people who were detained on Monday in the vicinity of Michalowo were taken to the facility of the Border Guard. Nobody said they needed medical help. We verified it, as far as we could, and, in fact, they did not require any medical attention. Everyone got food and drinks. None of these families, none of these adults wanted to apply for international protection in Poland. Everyone said they wanted to submit these applications in Germany. This was their country of destination for migration." The return of the group to the border, reported by Polish media earlier in the week, was condemned by government critics. Marek Krupinski, a member of UNICEF's national committee in Poland, said Poland was breaking its obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child by returning the group. 16. (SOUNDBITE) (Polish) MEMBER OF POLISH NATIONAL COMMITTEE OF UNICEF, MAREK KRUPINSKI, SAYING: "Poland is breaking the convention of which it was an author and which it signed. We have ratified the Convention on the Rights of the Child. And here we've been dealing with sort of transferring a bunch of parcels between one warehouse and another. Here or there a parcel can be rejected and as a result the goods inside become outdated. I apologise for such a comparison, but I have no other words of indignation at the situation that is happening now and at the heartlessness of decision-makers." However Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller said the situation on the border was "extremely difficult" and people crossing the border illegally should expect to be detained and deported. 11. (SOUNDBITE) (Polish) POLISH GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN, PIOTR MULLER, SAYING: "Unfortunately, border protection is extremely difficult. If someone crosses the border illegally and knows that this is illegal, (he) has to reckon with the fact that if he reaches the territory of Poland, (he) will be taken to a migrants centre and later deported." Poland and fellow EU countries Lithuania and Latvia have reported sharp increases in migrants from countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq crossing their borders from Belarus. Warsaw and Brussels say it is a form of hybrid warfare designed to put pressure on the EU over sanctions against Minsk.
