The Rama VIII Bridge is a striking sight you see when you have a view over Bangkok, with its 160m tall inverted Y pylon and cable stays supporting the bridge across the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok. I have seen the bridge on so many vista’s when I have looked out over Bangkok, I have been driven over it at times and for years said to myself “I should come and walk over this one day.” I love the look of the bridge and its height gives is such a commanding presence. I finally did this in May 2024. It was so enjoyable just walking across the bridge, soaking it all in and filming and photographing as I walked the span of the bridge across the Chao Phraya. After completing the bridge phase I the set out on the ‘must do’ when you visit the bridge and found my way to the simply stunning and wonderful Rama 8 Café on the bank of the Chao Phraya River. This Rama VIII Bridge might not be high on everyone’s things to do in Bangkok, but honestly, if you have been to Bangkok on a few occasions and want something different to do, this is a wonderful little 2 – 3 hour self tour! How to get there: For me I started at Sathorn Pier and caught a Chao Phraya River Ferry to Thewet Pier, which was excellent as the Ferry going underneath the bridge for a different view! I the walked West from the Pier along Krung Kasem Road to Samsen Road, turning right and walking South to Bang Khun Phrom Intersection with the Rama VIII Bridge on ramp above you, then simply follow the road West along the underneath of the bridge to the stairs that take you up and onto the bridge. The Rama 8 Café is a short walk from the base of the bridge on the Western side of the river. You will see a little entrance gateway with some flags and there will even be a sign with Rama 8 Café. Simply walk – respectfully, through this little community following the main path and signs and after about 100m you will come across the entrance to the Café gardens.
