In this video, we take a deeper look at employment relations in the supply chains for garments and sugar. These supply chains include the agricultural production of cotton and sugarcane respectively. Work in these farms is seasonal and informal. Agricultural workers are not organised into unions and are only protected by the most basic labour laws. Higher up the value chain, we can observe vast networks of garment and yarn manufacturers and sugar processing firms. Workers are often employed under non-standard conditions and just like in agriculture, some workers are particularly vulnerable because of their age, gender, caste, and history of migration. You will learn how Supply chains benefit from these vulnerabilities and from non-standard employment relations. This is the first lecture from the module on Challenges for Decent Work in Sugar and Garments.
