A beloved mentorship program at Glen Oaks High School is facing an uncertain future. After more than 30 years of service, the Glen Oaks Security Dads...a group of devoted fathers and community men...are struggling to recruit a new generation to continue their work. With many of the founding members now in their late sixties and seventies, the program that has long been a pillar of stability on campus could soon fade away. Each school day in Baton Rouge, students entering the courtyard at lunchtime are greeted by the men in red shirts who offer reassurance and guidance. But this tradition was born out of tragedy. In 1993, the campus was shaken by the fatal shooting of student Marlon Wells. In response, concerned fathers from the neighborhood, led by Tommie Stout, stepped forward to patrol the school grounds and restore a sense of safety. The Security Dads became mentors, father figures, and advocates for students. They walk the halls offering encouragement, discipline when needed and emotional support. They also raise money to help students with fees, uniforms and supplies. Now, as time catches up with the men who built the program, they are issuing a heartfelt call for reinforcements hoping younger fathers will step up to preserve a legacy that has shaped generations.
