Family, friends and colleagues gathered in Uniontown Thursday for the funeral of veteran Associated Press reporter George Esper, 79, who died last week at his home near Boston after a long illness. The sanctuary of St. George Maronite Catholic Church on Lebanon Terrace was filled with people who came to pay their respects to the Uniontown native, who spent 10 years covering the Vietnam War for the Associated Press, including the last two as Saigon AP bureau chief. He was one of three reporters who stayed behind after the last Americans were evacuated during the fall of Saigon in April 1975, and managed to get out a story by telephone.
