Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras' Chamber Music ensemble Ventus Quintet performing Leo J. Kaurffmann's Quintett, May 2018 Hope Rogers, flute Nathaniel Sanchez, oboe Kevin Meaux, clarinet Ryan Williamson, horn Emmy Hensley, bassoon From coach Dr. Don DeRoche: "Many years ago I was a member of a woodwind quintet, and one of our staple pieces was the Leo J. Kauffmann Quintett (1943). When I started coaching for the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestras, I was disappointed to discover that the piece had gone out of print. This was particularly sad news to me, because I liked the piece and thought it worked very well with high school and college students (not to mention that professional groups could add it to their repertoire to good advantage). It is a charming set of five movements—all short—each ranging from 1 ½ minutes to 3 minutes. The Kauffmann Quintett is technically out of print except for the pocket score. Universal will copy the parts for you upon request. There is not much information about Leo J. Kauffmann. The little bio below appears on the Universal web site. There is a slightly larger bio in the score: 'Kauffmann lost his job at the Rheinish Music School in Cologne because the Nazis considered him a musical avant-gardist. He became a teacher of composition at the Strasbourg Conservatoire in 1940 and died in an aerial bombing attack in 1944.'"
