Official Ninja Nerd Website: https://ninjanerd.org Ninja Nerds! In this lecture, Professor Zach Murphy will present the physiology of gastrointestinal motility within the large intestine. We begin with an overview of the colon's primary functions, including the absorption of water and electrolytes, the formation and storage of feces, and the housing of beneficial gut microbiota. The lecture explores different motility patterns, such as haustral contractions, which mix and expose luminal contents to the mucosa for absorption, and mass movements, which propel fecal matter toward the rectum. We then review the neural regulation of colonic motility, focusing on the enteric nervous system and how it is influenced by parasympathetic stimulation from the pelvic splanchnic nerves and sympathetic input from the lumbar region. Hormonal and reflexive mechanisms are also discussed, including the gastrocolic reflex and its role in initiating mass movements after meals.
