Week 3, Part 2 of my Essex County, Massachusetts Little Big Year — winter birding on the North Shore with a focus on coastal habitats and birding ethics. This episode finishes out Week 3 with birding at some of the most productive coastal locations in northeastern Massachusetts, including Salisbury Beach, Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Joppa Flats in Newburyport, and Plum Island. These sites are key winter hotspots for waterfowl, shorebirds, raptors, and Arctic visitors along the New England coast. During this episode, I encounter and photograph a Snowy Owl, and take time to discuss ethical birding and wildlife photography, including responsible viewing, distance, and minimizing disturbance — especially with high-profile species. 📍 Locations featured: • Salisbury Beach, MA • Parker River National Wildlife Refuge • Joppa Flats, Newburyport • Plum Island, Massachusetts 🔗 Resources mentioned: https://www.massaudubon.org/nature-wi... https://www.massaudubon.org/news/late... This series documents my first full year of birding, focused entirely on Essex County, MA — revisiting species I’ve already seen, working toward better photographs, and learning more about bird identification, behavior, and seasonal movement in New England. ▶️ Watch Week 3, Part 1 to see how the week began.
