Musical Miniatures for the Classical Guitar - Steven Saulls, Classical Guitarist About the composer and the music... Ferdinando Carulli (1770–1841) was a prolific Italian composer and guitarist known as one of the founding fathers of the classical guitar tradition. He is particularly celebrated for his extensive body of work for the instrument, including pedagogical studies that are still used by students today. Born in Naples, Carulli was initially trained as a cellist. He switched his focus to the guitar around the age of 20, teaching himself due to a lack of local instructors. With no formal guitar training available, Carulli developed his own method of playing. He began giving popular concerts in Naples, which helped to make the guitar more popular and established his early reputation. After touring Europe, Carulli moved to Paris in 1808. The city was a major musical hub at the time, and his arrival sparked a "guitar mania" among Parisian society. In Paris, Carulli became a highly sought-after guitar teacher. He created a large body of pedagogical works to train a new generation of classical guitarists. His most famous work is the "Méthode complète pour guitare ou lyre, op. 27", published in 1810. This influential guitar method is still used by students worldwide. Ferdinando Carulli's Andantino in A minor, Op. 241, No. 19 is a popular and well-known study piece for classical guitar students. It is part of the composer's acclaimed guitar method, École de guitare, Op. 241, first published around 1825. The piece has a four-part structure, with each section repeated. Section A (bars 1–8): The piece opens firmly in the home key of A minor, featuring arpeggios, short melodic phrases, and syncopation. Section B (bars 9–16): While remaining in A minor, this section places a greater emphasis on the E major chord, which is the dominant (fifth) chord of the key. Section C (bars 17–24): A shift occurs with a direct modulation to C major, the relative major key of A minor. Section D (bars 25–32): This section mirrors the structure of Section B but in the new key. It emphasizes the G7 chord, the dominant seventh chord of C major, to prepare for the return to the main key. Da Capo al Fine: After the repeats, the performer returns to the beginning to play sections A and B once more, concluding at the "fine" marking at the end of bar 16. The piece is an excellent resource for upper-beginner or early-intermediate classical guitar students. It provides practice for arpeggios and rhythmic stability. The melodic and harmonic structure of the piece provides a comprehensive musical story, while also serving as an accessible resource for students to become more familiar with the keys of A minor and C major.
