Is it lawless to teach that Christians are not under the old covenant law? I hear that accusation a lot. And here’s the thing. I teach and believe that obedience to God is of utmost importance for believers. We are to submit to His authority over our lives. Jesus said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). I’m sure you would agree that not every command given by God applies to every person at all times. Some only apply to certain people—like men, or women, or parents, or Levitical priests. And some only applied at certain times, like building an ark before the flood, or gathering manna in the wilderness, or while Israel was in exile. And I’m sure you would also agree that we are each only expected to keep the commands of God that apply to us. We’re not expected to keep commands that God gave to someone else! The NT expressly teaches that many of the commands given under the Old Covenant Law do not apply to Christians today. For example, the repeated animal sacrifices for sin atonement in the Torah are no longer required because of the once, and for all atoning sacrifice of Jesus (Rom. 6:10; Heb 9:26; 10:10, 18). Don’t get me wrong. We still serve God and we still obey His commands, “But now we are released from the law, having died with Christ to that which held us captive, so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit and not in the old way of the written code” (Rom 7:6). And the Bible says that “If you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law: (Gal. 5:18). DONATE TO OUR MINISTRY https://TheBiblicalRoots.org/#donate (Thank you!)
