This is my concerto for jazz pianist and symphony orchestra. There is a lot of improvisation in the piano part which David Beebee performs excellently. It will obviously be different with a different pianist. I wrote this concerto as a reaction to usual piano concertos which call for a lot of technical dexterity but not creativity, as a jazz musician would interpret the term. This makes it rather unusual and unplayable by the vast majority of classical pianists, although in previous centuries up until the time of Beethoven it could be common-place to allow the featured soloist to have scope for his or her own improvisation.
