London Walk - 4K - Shoreditch and Brick Lane and Spitlefields Market - August 2024

Wandering around East London on a hot summer Sunday morning in August, from 'Old Street' station to Shoreditch, heading down Brick Lane and through Spitlefields Market, ending finally at Liverpool Street Station. The sun was shining with the temperature in the high 20's, and the city was buzzing with life and activity. The journey begins at the newly refurbished entrance to the 'Old Street' underground tube station in east London. From there we head along Old Street towards Shoreditch, turning on Great Eastern Street. After some ways we take a detour through a side street of New Inn Yard to view some fine examples of the fabulous street art that Shoreditch is famous for. Entire walls multiple stories high have been painted with world class murals and other amazing street art that are truly a sight to behold. Net we turn onto Shoreditch High Street, and then turn again onto Bethnal Green Roadhead to head past the ever popular 'BoxPark Shoreditch', a food court and shopping area made of shipping containers, home to many amazing foods and delicious bites and one of a kind boutiques. Passing more street art along the way, we then turn on off onto Sclater Street and into the beginnings of the bric-a-brac market of Brick Lane. At the end of Sclater Street we turn into Brick Lane proper, and the market truly begins. Brick Lane is famous for it's trendy crowd and eclectic collection of shops and market traders. Heading north on Brick Lane we pass by the famous bagel shops, and as always, the long lines of hungry punters waiting outside for the delicious hot fresh bagels on offer. From there we turn around and head south, back down Brick Lane into the main and busiest section of the Brick Lane area. We pass by the famous Truman Brewery, take a quick detour into the 'Backyard Market', and pass the many a vintage clothes shops that the area is also famous for. We then take a detour again into the busling alleyway of Dray Walk, and then drop into the food market of the Upmarket Brick Lane Food Hall. Finally leaving Brick Lane behind, we head along Hanbury Street towards Spitlefields Market. Again another detour takes us down Wilkes Street, a street that is a step back in time with is fantastic Georgian terraced houses built in the 18th Century. Wilkes street was also one of the streets in Whitechapel that were associated with Jack the Ripper, famous murderer known around the world that was never caught despite dastardly deeds, who stalked his prey in these streets back in Victorian times. Only the cars parked along the sides of the road brake the time travel spell that these amazing buildings cast. Turning onto Fournier Street, we next see the grand white building and spire of Christ Church Spitlefields, an amazing 18th Century place of worship that still stands and serves the local faithful to this day. We then cross the street and enter into the old main entrance of what was Old Spittlefields Market. A market over 350 years old, Old Spitlefields Market has had many chapters and today is a trendy place to come and eat and shop for locals and tourists alike. Relatively large and with two main sections, visitors can choose from many foods and flavours from around the world, as well as shop for stylish clothes and jewellery and artwork of a kind that you would struggle to find elsewhere in the city. Busy on any day of the week, on a sunny summer Sunday the market is packed and buzzing with shoppers happily enjoying the offerings on display. After walking through the various areas of Spitlefields Market and taking a quick wander around Bishops Square, we head out along Brushfield Street and to the main road of Bishopsgate. Passing by the empty offices as we go, we head along Bishops Gate towards Liverpool Street station, where our journey finally ends.
