Montreal's Chinatown is located in the north of Old-Montreal within a square limited by four streets : Viger Avenue, Saint-Urban Street, René-Lévesque Boulevard and Saint-Laurent Boulevard. Its most important commercial street is De la Gauchetière Street where we find a lot of shops and restaurants. The first chinese immigrants arrived in Montreal in March 1877. Later, more arrivants, mostly Cantonese people, gradually established in this sector which was formally more residential than commercial. Most chinese people here were working as laundresses, allowing them to bypass the salary discrimination that they would have if they were in British-Columbia. It's in 1902 that this place was officially called "Chinatown". Firstly, the population in this discrict was rare similar to the situation with the French population in Canada in 1663 : women were rare. This limited weddings and births. This disbalance was gradually compensated and in 2006, 54% of the population were women. As of January 2024, Montreal identifies Chinatown as a historical place. It holds a lot of shops of chinese objects and special decorations as well as restaurants of chinese food and pastry. A few vietnamese restaurants are also found in this district. One of its most popular restaurants is Kim Fung restaurant located in Place Du Quartier its most important indoor place. Nearby metro station : Place d'Armes 🟠 : The main gateway to Chinatown, Old Montreal & Notre-Dame Basilica, located at the intersection Saint-Urbain Street and Viger. • [4K] Walking tour in Place-d'Armes metro s... 🔔 Subscribe for more walking tour videos! 🗓️ Recording date : 2025/07/23 🎵 Music credits : Intro logo : Sakuya by PeriTune | https://peritune.com/ Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 Unported License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/...
