The new RAM 1500 has sparked a lot of conversation with its hybrid plastic and metal upper control arms. After seeing coverage from Pickup Truck and SUV Talk, The Car Guy Online, and articles from The Drive and CarBuzz explaining why it’s supposedly fine, I wanted to see for myself. So in this video, I take one of these control arms, cut it open, and show you exactly what is inside. On paper, engineers and apologists say the upper control arm doesn’t carry much load compared to the lower arm, and technically they are right. But truck buyers have seen decades of cost-cutting decisions spun as innovations that are supposedly better for us, when in reality they often just benefit the manufacturer and investors. From exaggerated towing claims to cylinder deactivation failures, DEF system headaches, the removal of buttons in favor of cheap screens, and now subscription-based apps and rebranded “supervised” self-driving features, it has all added up to a lot of frustration for consumers who simply want reliable, durable trucks. This upper control arm symbolizes that trend for me. Even if it works as designed, it feels like yet another example of value engineering being marketed as progress.
