Ken Whelan's fascinating talk to members of the Wild Trout Trust on the amazing abilities of brown trout to rapidly adapt to new habitats. In only around 4000 generations since the last ice age, the brown trout has colonised and adapted to an incredible variety of habitats spanning an impressive geographic range. In fact, with more recent examples in only the last 170 years, brown trout have been introduced to brand new environments and (in that short space of time) adopted a mind-boggling array of life-history strategies. These include sea-trout, estuarine/slob trout, resident freshwater trout, freshwater migratory trout. That's not even to mention the dietary and hunting behavioural adaptations that have arisen and become distinct over longer evolutionary time-spans. Whether you're interested in fly fishing, a naturalist or professional biologist there will be something of interest in Dr Whelan's presentation for you.
