This pala was documented for the IAPC Internship at Gangarampur College, Dakshin Dinajpur. Mayabandhaki is regarded as one of the oldest Khon Palagans, although the identity of its original palakar (playwright) and the date of its inaugural performance remain historically unverified. Oral tradition suggests that the pala has been circulating across the undivided Dinajpur region for more than a century. The narrative foregrounds the oppressive dimensions of the historical social order, particularly the trafficking of women, the practice of pledging women as collateral, and exploitation within the zamindari (landlord) structure. These themes are not presented merely as social incidents but function as symbolic critiques of systemic injustice. Because of its powerful engagement with such socially sensitive concerns, the pala continues to be performed in various districts, sustaining its relevance within contemporary folk performance culture.
