Yonge Street (/jʌŋ/; "young") is a major arterial route in the Canadian province of Ontario connecting the shores of Lake Ontario in Toronto to Lake Simcoe, a gateway to the Upper Great Lakes. Until 1999, the Guinness Book of World Records repeated the popular misconception it was 1,896 km (1,178 mi)[4] long, making it the longest street in the world; this was due to a conflation of Yonge Street with the rest of Ontario's Highway 11. Yonge Street (including the Bradford-to-Barrie extension) is only 56 kilometres (35 mi) long.[1] Yonge Street is the real main street in Toronto. Landmarks like the Hudson Bay Company, Eaton's Centre, the Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre, and Yonge and Dundas Square are all on Yonge Street. Big parades and cultural events roll down Yonge Street too. This is the route for the Pride Parade, Caribana Parade, and the Santa Claus Parade. Until 1999, people thought Yonge Street was the longest street in the world, stretching 1800 kilometres from Lake Ontario to the Ontario-Minnesota border. It was even in the Guinness World Book of Records. But it was all a big mistake. There was a misconception that Yonge was a part of Highway 11. Unfortunately, to be the longest street in the world, the names must be the same. Keep your eyes sharp when you walk down Yonge and take note of the weird mix of architecture down this street. Centuries of styles are mashed next to each other. It's a little bizarre for a downtown core street to lack any kind of uniformity. Yonge's unique look is the result of the city having demolished and rebuilt buildings over time.
