Did you know that the heart can have a direct effect on swallowing, voice, and cognition? One of the many reasons I’m so passionate about promoting medical education in the SLP field is because of how “whole-body” our work really is! I personally didn’t take any courses until recently that were dedicated to the cardiovascular system and how changes to the anatomy and physiology of the heart can impact my clinical investigations. SLPs are sorely needed in the cardiovascular ICU, which may come as a surprise to most people!
