Colon is nothing but large intestine. It starts from an organ called cecum on the right side of the abdomen and ends in the something called a rectum that is the last part of large intestine. So most of the large intestine is fixed to the abdominal wall.There is one or two parts which are a little free so in that sigmoid colon is one of that. Sigmoid colon is the almost near the end of the large intestine. So it is more mobile and it is not fixed to the walls. Because it is loose sometimes it gets twisted and we get what is called a volvulus. So now about diverticula in the sigmoid colon. Diverticular are nothing but small pouches in the wall of the large intestines. See the intestines are made of two layers of muscles one longitudinal muscle one circular muscle and they are lined by internally there is one lining membrane called mucous membrane and outside it is covered with what is called serosa. So whole large intestine is made of this sort of structure so when between these two muscles if there are gaps lining membrane inside the intestine large intestine protrudes to that gaps in the muscles and that is what we call as diverticula. So sometimes motion can enter and get fixed there and they can get infected or it may start bleeding so certain complications can happen from diverticula. But all diverticula we need not surgically treat them unless they are causing symptoms. The symptoms being diverticulitis when there is infection repeated infection you have to treat it or if there is lot of bleeding from the you know how to treat it surgically. So sigmoid colon is a part of large intestine and it has got its own peculiarities but there is nothing like special diseases.
