Hi everyone! I am back home, in beautiful South Africa. In this video, I explore the town of Gansbaai. It is located about two hours from Cape Town and is known for its breathtaking coastal views, fishing culture and reputation as a shark cage diving and whale watching hotspot. On a personal level, it is also my former hometown where I grew up as a teenager - more specifically, the last two and a half years of my high school life. Needless to say, this is a very special, emotional vlog for me. This is the first video I made during my one year sabbatical (starting October 2024) and I could think of no better place to start than my old stomping ground. Join me as I go on a walk through memory lane and revisit my teenage steps. I will also talk about the history of the town and visit key landmarks, areas and residential areas. Note that this vlog was filmed over a couple of days. The first day was extremely windy but luckily the second day was unbeatable from a weather perspective. On the glass half full side, perhaps it is good for you to get a perspective of just how varied the weather is in Gansbaai - the contrast is something to behold! In the first part of the video, I walk along the wall in Gansbaai's Old Harbour, which is a very significant walk for me from a personal perspective. I explain why in the video. I then walk around the area where I used to go running and visit the graveyard and caravan park, before talking about the origins of the town. I then visit the Old Harbour, talk about the geographic issues Gansbaai and the technological issues the fishermen faced historically. I then visit Gansbaai Fish Market (Gansbaai Vismark) and have a quick snack. The next stop is the town centre where I provide commentary on just how much change Gansbaai experienced. There are several new businesses and shops that I do not recognise but there are also snippets of familiarity. I visit the bus stop where I took the bus to Hermanus High School and find a surprise. The wind really starts to batter me and I decided to end filming on that particular day. The following day arrives and I could not ask for better weather. I start with a visit to a local coffee shop, before heading to Danger Point where I talk about shipwrecks in the area, especially the HMS Birkenhead. I also mention the Flying Dutchman and the connection to Gansbaai. The areas of Kleinbaai, Franskraal and De Kelders are next. In Kleinbaai, I visit the harbour where the cage diving boats depart as well as a local restaurant with an impressive skeleton of a female Southern Right Whale. In Franskraal, I talk about the history of the Gansbaai Canoe (Kano), a particular invention that saw the light in this part of the world. In De Kelders, I visit a cave and go on some breathtaking walks along the local walking trail. After my walk, I am back in Gansbaai where I see the house I grew up in as a teenager, and walk around the Dutch Reformed church. I then make my way to the harbour (now on a windstill day!) where I talk more about Gansbaai's history in the 20th century, including the Second World War and the developments in the fishing industry in the 1950s and 1960s. In the final part of the vlog, I return to the harbour wall where I go on an emotional stroll and talk about what the town meant to me. I hope you enjoy this video of Gansbaai, my old hometown! I will bring you more videos of beautiful South Africa in due course as well, as I will be in the country for the first part of my sabbatical.
