Understanding and Addressing Microaggressions in Children’s Mental Health Services

Participants joined Dr. Rodriguez and Leslie Giglio, MPH for a screening of Understanding Microaggressions and their Impact along with a thought provoking presentation to understand and address microaggressions in children’s mental health services. This video followed a conversation between a client and their therapist, as they discuss microaggressions and unpack their harmful impacts. Self-awareness of these biases can help providers to support the therapeutic relationship, improve treatment outcomes, and repair potential harms. Additionally, a case study was presented to help practitioners reflect on the critical role they play, and actionable strategies that can be taken to reduce the impacts of microaggressions will be shared. This virtual screening and presentation is for all mental health providers across New York State, working with youth and families to help build awareness of microaggressions, and an understanding of their impacts on mental health.
