The countermelody is another melody that seems to be having a conversation with the main melody. The countermelody adds more notes when the main melody is on long sustained notes; the countermelody is on long notes (or moves rhythmically on one note) as the main melody becomes more active. This technique makes the countermelody and main melody sound as though they are talking back and forth. In this video, I create two countermelodies to support a well-known tune. I use 3 simple techniques: call-and-response, harmonizing, and imitation. The “call-and-response” technique is what’s mentioned in the above first paragraph, creating the second, third (or even more) voice in a conversation. To “harmonize,” the countermelody just plays in harmony, providing even more support. So, it goes from having its own independent voice in a conversation to playing along with the main melody. When a melody plays something and another melody repeats that same thing, that is “imitation.” In the video, the countermelodies are first sung together a cappella, then played separately over the song’s simple chord progression. #musicproduction #musictheory #ohholynight
