They called her Neda Agha-Soltan. Neda in Persian means voice calling and this is sometimes understood to mean voice calling with a divine message. In June of 2009, Iran had its presidential elections - it was widely perceived to have been an unfair election, and the election was disputed. Although Neda was not political, she believed that her vote should have counted, and on June 20th, 2009, she attended a protest. On her way to the protest a shot rang out and Neda was hit. It was caught on video and drew international attention. I saw the video and the look in her eyes seemed to scream at me. Her mother said that the look in Neda’s eyes said it all. So what did she tell us with just one look, and not a single word? The look in her eyes was intense, passionate, and screaming: “Look at me because I am one of you, and this is the reality of the world that we live in” - by her martyrdom Neda caused people to search inside of themselves, and to question the world that they were living in. I was very moved by the martyrdom of Neda and in 2010 I wrote this song in honor of her. This is a live take of the song. I wrote and recorded this song in 2010. The entire studio was lost on my journey to Uruguay - along with every song I ever recorded from 1978 to 2007! As was everything else – I returned from my “spiritual journey” with the cloths on my back! The songs I uploaded on this channel were the only recordings of all the recordings I ever made that survived the journey! Uruguayan customs seized all my gear and personal property claimed they wanted taxes that exceeded what I paid for the equipment! I was just visiting – not clear as to why I would have owed any taxes at all. As with all governments – and agencies thereof – I’m quite sure it made perfect sense to them!
