The general formula for disaccharides is CnH2nOn-1. Disaccharides can be classified based on the type of monosaccharides they contain. Maltose, which consists of two glucose units, has the structure α-D-glucopyranose α 1-4 glycosidic bond . It is a reducing sugar and is found in germinating grains. Isomaltose, also composed of two glucose units, has the structure α-D-glucopyranose -α 1-6 glycosidic bond . It is a reducing sugar and is produced during starch digestion. Lactose, made up of a glucose and a galactose unit, has the structure β-D-galactopyranose & β-D-glucopyranose -β 1-4 glycosidic bond . It is a reducing sugar and is found in milk and dairy products. Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide, consists of a galactose and a fructose unit with the structure β-D-galactopyranose & β-D-Fructofuranose -β 1-4 glycosidic bond . It is not naturally occurring and is used as a laxative and in the treatment of hepatic encephalopathy. Cellobiose, composed of two glucose units, has the structure β-D-glucopyranose -β 1-4 glycosidic bond . It is a non-reducing sugar and is found in the cell walls of plants. Sucrose, commonly known as table sugar, consists of a glucose and a fructose unit with the structure α-D-glucopyranose & β-D-Fructofuranose -α1 β2 glycosidic bond . It is a non-reducing sugar and is obtained from sugarcane and sugar beets. Invert sugar is a mixture of glucose and fructose formed by hydrolyzing sucrose. It is found in honey and is used as a sweetener. Trehalose, made up of two glucose units, has the structure α-D-glucopyranose -α 1-1 glycosidic bond . It is a non-reducing sugar and is found in certain organisms like fungi and insects.
