Taiwan is run like a nation but is not widely recognized as a sovereign state because of its disputed status in the international community. Now a thriving democracy, this multiethnic society of 23 million people has a rich history and culture shaped by Indigenous communities as well as different waves of immigration and eras of colonialism, spanning the last four centuries. The question of identity is unique for many Taiwanese in light of their specific educational and political realities. The island officially known as “The Republic of China” can be traced back to the defeat of the Chinese Nationalist Party or Kuomingtang (KMT) in the Chinese civil war of 1949. Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai-shek, and his forces retreated to Taiwan, which until the end of WWII had been a Japanese colony for 50 years. Chiang’s suspicions of the local Taiwanese led to strict martial law and decades of oppression known as The White Terror. A KMT education initially emphasized Sinicization, and a cultural renaissance centered on the Republic of China as a broader political entity. The post-war generation that came of age in the 70s and 80s spoke Mandarin, identified with Chinese culture, and had been taught to see themselves as citizens of the Republic of China. However, two significant changes took place in the 1990s: democratization and liberalization. In 1996, Taiwan’s first democratically elected president, Lee Teng-hui, advocated a localization movement by consolidating growing Taiwanese nationalism through textbooks that focused on the history of Taiwan. The education system soon stood out as a way of encouraging a new generation to consider their own identity as it related to the larger world. This journey to Taiwan begins with evolving discussions on identity in the nation that cannot call itself a nation. #Taiwan #ROC #KMT #DPP #China #ChineseCivilWar #identity #politics #TaiwanPlus ▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁▁ 🌏 TaiwanPlus | Taiwan to the World Breaking news and original programs.
