We asked one of the most renowned spoken word artists in the country, Suli Breaks, to come and inspire some of our new students during Welcome Week 2018, and to talk about how SOAS University can be the incubator for great ideas. He decided to surprise our students at our central London campus with this performance of 'One Idea'. Thanks to Suli for this inspirational performance, be sure to follow him on the below channels: / sulibreezy / sulibreaks / sulibreaks If you're interested in finding out more about SOAS University of London, visit: http://www.soas.ac.uk #WeAreSoas Many thanks to Word on the Curb for producing this video. Transcript: Chapter 1 The story starts with an idea And a boy or girl in their bedroom With nothing but a pen and laptop. Chapter 2 That pen has scribbled furiously across that page countless times and that laptop has spent numerous hours illuminated in front of tired eyes, cans of energy drinks and an idea which has now become a passion. Chapter 3 That idea turned passion has now found its way to the inbox of like-minded individuals signed off with words like "Be honest, what do you think? Do you think this will bang?" Chapter 4 That idea turned project turned "confirmation from friends and trusted ones that it will indeed BANG" has turned into a project. Skip to chapter 6 That idea has become viable, that project has become a business, that project has become a reality, that project has become potential to change the world. As logical people, we become stuck in our ways, reluctant to change, function the same, when there's nothing to gain “If it’s not broke ,why fix it?” “There is no need to re-invent the wheel” Forgetting that all skyscrapers were once slabs of stone. Google, all these apps, were once just a scrap of codes? But skip back to chapter 1, that boy could have been Jobs, and that idea could have been Apple, that girl could have been Nina Simone. That idea could have been freedom. It doesn't take much more than an idea, and a whole lot of effort whether it happens in a meeting boardroom or campus dorm room all it ever takes, is one idea to change the world. You have 3 years to think about that.
