The LLNL-led MFEM (Modular Finite Element Methods) project provides high-order mathematical calculations for large-scale scientific simulations. The project’s third community workshop was held on October 26, 2023, with participants around the world. Learn more about MFEM at https://mfem.org/. Jacob Lotz from Delft University of Technology presented “Computation and Reduced Order Modelling of Periodic Flows.” Many types of periodic flows can be found in nature and industrial applications and their computation is expensive due to lengthy time simulations. His work aims to reduce the cost of these computations. His team solves periodic flows in a space-time domain in which both ends in time are periodic such that they only have to model one period. MFEM is used to discretize the space-time domain and solve our discretized system of equations. Lotz applies a hyper-reduced Proper Orthogonal Decomposition Galerkin reduced order model to speed up our computations. During the presentation he showed (results of) their full order model and their advances in reduced order modelling. LLNL-VIDEO-857207
