Journey Through Oldham Cotton Mills 1860: From Raw Bales to 200 Spinning Mills (Full Process) Journey Through Oldham Cotton Mills 1860: From Raw Bales to 200 Spinning Mills (Full Process) Step inside the cotton spinning capital of the world. In 1860, Oldham, Lancashire, operated nearly 200 cotton mills — more spinning power concentrated in one town than almost anywhere on Earth. This video takes you through the complete journey of raw American cotton, from the moment compressed bales arrived at the mill gate to the finished yarn leaving for the weaving towns of East Lancashire. Follow every stage of production: the dangerous blowing room where bales were torn open in clouds of choking dust; the carding room where women and girls fed cotton through wire-toothed cylinders; the drawing and roving frames that stretched fibres thinner and thinner; and the enormous self-acting spinning mules — 150 feet long, carrying over 1,300 spindles each — where skilled minders, piecers, and child scavengers worked side by side with some of the most advanced machinery the Industrial Revolution ever produced. Built on machines engineered by the legendary Platt Brothers, Oldham's mills consumed nearly 8% of America's entire slave-grown cotton crop. Tens of thousands of workers — men, women, and children as young as four — laboured 14-hour shifts in heat, noise, and cotton dust that destroyed their lungs over decades. But in 1860, this colossal industry stood unknowingly on the edge of catastrophe. The American Civil War was about to cut off the cotton supply and plunge Lancashire into the devastating Cotton Famine of 1861–1865. 📜 Based on historical records, factory documentation, and verified industrial practices. 🔔 Subscribe for more authentic Industrial Revolution factory stories. #OldhamMills #CottonMills #IndustrialRevolution #SteamAgeFactory #Lancashire #VictorianEngland #CottonSpinning #FactoryLife #BritishHistory #PlattBrothers
