She has him brought to his chambers, where the stench of decay is strong. She oversees the various potions and cures left by his bedside, all given in an attempt to save him. Melisandre contemptuously turns her head away from them. None of them would have worked, and they have no interest in observing them. Instead, she focuses on the patient. The poison has already spread, and it is difficult, but she does not give up. She knows the costs of failure and pushes herself forward. By the time she emerges hours later, there are bags under her eyes, and she nearly stumbles. Some of the men Stannis sent to help her guide her to her room. As she disappears down the halls, she wears the rest of the Small Council wearily, shooting them hard looks as if to let them know she’s onto them.
