#makridervlogs / @makridervlogs #partition1947 #rawalpindi #sagrivillage #rawat Hello everyone, Last Sunday, I headed towards Sagri village (now Town) to explore the historical places built before partition (1947). Among them are twin Hindu Temples (Trimurti & Shiva Temples) and Water Well, Gurdwara & Dharamshala, Khalsa High School (built in 1883) and a large Pond full of water. Sagri is an old town and there must be many more interesting stories to be discovered and things to be explored. The architecture of Hindus and Sikhs is mainly characterized by temples, gurdwaras, baradaris and havelis. There are many historical monuments in and around Islamabad and Rawalpindi District, which are in very bad state of preservation. Among them are the Hindu temple at Rawal lake, Bara Dari at Kuri, Serai (inn)Kharbuza, Baoli (stepwell) of Mughal period at Kenthala, not far from the Buddhist caves of Shah Allah Ditta, the funerary wall enclosure of Mughal period at Mohra Malhiar in Shah Allah Ditta, the Buddhist stupa (tope) at Manikayala a little distance from Hindu Temples at Sagri, Rawat fort, the tombs of Ghakhar soldiers at Batal near Darwala, the mosque of Mai Qamro, the tomb of Akbar the Great's soldier, at Bagh jogian, the fort of Hathi Khan Ghakhar at Pharwala, Krishna temple in Kallar Syedan, gurdwaras at Kanoha, Doberan Kallan, and at Mohra Bhatian in Kallar Syedan, the temples at Sagri and gurdwara at Saidpur, at present turned into a gallery containing photographs of the evolution of Islamabad. All the monuments are highly in need of conservation. Temples at Sagri Village: There are two temples in Sagri town. They lie on the road that leads to Sagri town. Sagri was very prosperous town during the Sikh period. Both temples have a squared plan superimposed by a squared shikhara carrying amalaka atop. One of the temples, facing north, is smaller than the adjoining temple. The bigger temple faces west. This latter is decorated with floral designs inside and outside. However, the outer paintings have not survived but their traces are still visible. The garbhagriha of this temple has three sides decorated with arches, two on northern and southern walls with cusped arches, and one on the eastern wall with a spilt arch, which was apparently made to place the image of deity. The ceiling of the temple is adorned with floral patterns, notably lotus. The chhaja or dripstone of the temple has partially collapsed. One finds traces of the paintings on the mouldings of the temple. Gurdwara & Dharamshalla at Sagri: The gurdwara of Sagri is large and well known for its two beautiful pillars which support the ceiling which are in ribs and panels style. The bases of both the pillars are octagons, decorated with marble slabs carrying the names of the donors. There are two entrances to the main hall, flanked by cusped arches. Some inscriptions are also fixed on the bases of the pillars. The capitals of the pillars are decorated with floral designs. The floor of the main hall has many slabs with the names of the donors who contributed to the construction of the gurdwara. Some of the names, with contributed amounts, are inscribed on the slabs of main hall and courtyard. At present, the gurdwara is in a dilapidated condition. The ceiling is falling into pieces and the boundary wall has collapsed. Plaster on the outer walls has also come off. The cusped arches that flank the entrances of the Gurdwara are also in deplorable condition. Khalsa High School - 1883 (Sagri Village, Rawat, Pakistan): Khalsa High School in Sagri Village is built by Sikh. They are more friendly to education. This school was built in 1883 by the name Khalsa High School, Sagri. Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims from all parts were taken education from this school before 1947. It was a school having a big play ground, Examination Hall, high roof and good ventilations class rooms, wide corridors and a staff room. It is another example of numerous educational institutes built all over the Punjab by the Sikh community. Khalsa High School is a 150 years old school. Their construction standard as compare to the present day. Old Water Tank (Pond) in Sagri Village: There is a huge water tank (pond) in Sagri which is almost three centuries old and was built by a very rich Hindu trader for the public use. It was filled with rain water. Public baths also existed nearby, but now have completely vanished. Pond is spread over an area of 1.5 acres. Hope you will enjoy my little efforts.
