Bentley Jr - The Stranger from Paradise. William Blake is widely known as a visionary poet, artist and printmaker, but the musical dimension of his work is all but neglected. Apparently, when Blake sang his poems at social gatherings, guests were greatly affected and afterwards remained for some time in a deep and contemplative silence – as if the ‘doors of perception’ had momentarily been swung wide open. Clearly, musical composition must have been an integral part of his overall creative process. According to his friend J.T.Smith, Blake ‘was entirely unacquainted with the science of music’, yet ‘ his ear was so good, his tunes were sometimes most singularly beautiful, and were noted down by musical professors.” Unfortunately, there is no trace of them. Did Blake intentionally omit his melodies from publication to encourage readers to improvise their own and enjoy similar epiphanies? ‘I give you the end of a golden string...(that)...will lead you in at Heaven’s gate’.
