The superior thyroid artery is the first anterior branch of the external carotid artery. It primarily supplies the thyroid gland, but also gives off several important branches along its course. 🩺 Branches of Superior Thyroid Artery: 1. Infrahyoid branch 🔹 Runs along the lower border of the hyoid bone 🔹 Supplies infrahyoid muscles 2. Sternocleidomastoid branch 🔹 Passes downward and laterally 🔹 Supplies sternocleidomastoid muscle 🔹 Sometimes arises directly from external carotid artery 3. Superior laryngeal artery 🔹 Pierces the thyrohyoid membrane with the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve 🔹 Supplies the larynx, especially the upper part 4. Cricothyroid branch 🔹 Small branch running across the cricothyroid membrane 🔹 Important in laryngeal surgery for collateral circulation 5. Glandular branches 🔹 Multiple branches supplying the thyroid gland, especially the superior pole 🧠 Clinical Tip: • The superior laryngeal artery is at risk during thyroid surgery—especially during ligation of the superior thyroid vessels.
