Hey Artnerds! I love a pretty watercolor palette, don't you? And I am SO susceptible to cute ads on Instagram, especially for art supplies! I've been getting a lot of Case for Making ads, so when they had a sale, I couldn't resist trying their store's handmade watercolors. Am I a victim of the hypebeast? You'll have to let me know! Get your own: Want to paint along? Get the lineart! Patrons have it, join today! https://tinyurl.com/4k23dbcj How to Draw Flowers: How to Color Flowers: Mentioned in this Video: Stoneground Paints Maimeri Blu CSY (which I think are trying to copy Case for Making): https://tinyurl.com/ysc95c8e Shownotes: Full Shownotes: https://tinyurl.com/sepr3m29 Pigment info in full shownotes This palette was REALLY DIFFICULT to get paints out Pigment info not included , just the paint name and the website, not even in the documentation Color list not included- no manifest I would have preferred the watercolors and the tin packaged seperately in this instance, would be easier on my hands. CFM Rose Carmine Naccarn French Vermillion Venetian Red CMF Cypress Citron Yellow Italian GOld Ochre Lt CFM Velvet Ultramarine Blue Light CMF Denim Indigo CFM Plum Swatching: Blick: Colors seem fairly rich and saturated, offer up immediate color, no real scrubbing. I'd like to know the pigment makeup of some of these CFM colors. I'm seeing a little scaling with the CFM Denim, which looks sorta like a prussian blue and is drying lighter than I expected, but we'll have to see how the masstone swatch dries. CFM Velvet looks like it granulates out with some black. CFM Cypress is really nice. These muddy the water pretty quickly Forced granulation swatches: Some colors granulate as expected (ult marine blue is v pretty), and some granulate that I wasn't sure would (cypress, denim, plum, velvet) Color Mixing: Atomic: Secondary color mixes for oranges and greens are weak- maybe it's the yellow I bought, while it's a cooler yellow, it's a bit on the white? side, instead of having good tinting strength. Adding a ltitle of the yellow ochre helps build up impact. Purples mix really nicely though, and that's not even using plum (which is already a purple mix) Their Velvet swatch online is much richer than the Velvet I received Optical: Colors glaze nicely without reactivating. Wet into Wet: Seeing a lot of scaling (not granulation, scaling) with certain colors, particularly Citron Yellow. This color seems like a real problem child They do actually have instructions on how to use the palette: https://caseformaking.com/pages/how-to Fieldtest: Although ultramarine blue does granulate, I feel like this one granulates kinda strangely. When these dry out, they're much harder to activate and get color off- I feel like there isn't enough humectant. Colors dry dusty and desaturated (the orange on the little pansies was much more vibrant when it was wet, now its vedry pastel and weak) Challenging to mix a good purple, and that should be NO problem, I have a cool red, a warm blue, and two pre-mixed purples in this set, plus a red violet. These are very eh when worked in thin layers, but they're just kinda bad when worked dry over dry or heavy wet over dry. Stodgy, not enough oxgall if you're like me and love good movement wet into wet. Color that should be heavy split granulators just aren't really, and that's so disappointing. Paints get used up really fast. Pros: Cute but expensive palette Cute embossed swatch sheet Supporting a small biz Cons: Expensive Poor performance, more like student grade than a good handmade Weak color coverage Dry desaturated Muddy Lineart Would recommend Maimeri or Stoneground over these The Verdict: Skip these watercolors, or Case for Making, please reformulate. There are other small batch, small biz watercolors on the market that perform better- Beam, Stoneground. While I was able to turn the illustration around, it's still not nearly as good as it should be. I think Case for Making is doing some interesting things with embossing paper, so i'll check that out at another time.
