A Very Personal Look Back I’ve been lucky enough to attend just over 30 Morrissey concerts so far – in France, Japan, Germany, and most often in London. The amazing part: I’ve never been affected by a cancellation. Yes, many of those shows were rougher, sweatier, and simply more rock‑and‑roll than in the rather sterile O2 Arena with its outrageous beer prices – and yet it was an unparalleled evening. Not just because of Morrissey himself, but because of that unique feeling when “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” rises from 20,000 ecstatic voices. You don’t even want to imagine what would have happened if Morrissey, as he once did in Dublin, had let the audience sing “Half a Person” on their own. I think that at 57, I would have stood there crying next to my 17‑year‑old son singing his heart out. What struck me most was how many young people were there. Anyone expecting a senior‑citizen gathering was sorely mistaken. There were mothers with daughters, fathers with sons, young punks, and groups of straight‑edge emos. And it seemed as if the whole world had shown up: of course the Mexicans, but also many Asians and quite a few from the States. Brilliant. The atmosphere was indescribable whenever Morrissey delivered his classics: Now My Heart Is Full, A Rush and a Push, Everyday Is Like Sunday, and the magnificent How Soon Is Now? There were, however, a few small things one could grumble about: when Amazona, the third new song in a row, came on, there were a few scattered boos – partly because, despite its strong guitar solo, it isn’t exactly a great track, and it’s a cover on top of that. Somehow it felt as if Moz wanted to deny the audience that sense of endless ecstasy – with just two or three more classics, he could have turned it into the concert of a lifetime for absolutely everyone. And there’s no doubt he had that incredible power in his hands that night. Why not slip in a Girl Afraid or Speedway instead? Yes, he can’t play everything, but those 20,000 people deserved 20 songs, not just 18. That’s Morrissey being Morrissey, especially when he once again slips into his victim role and begs people to buy his album instead of quietly savoring the incredible success of the evening. Sad. But on the other hand - I don´t care. Cause I had my special moment that night. During I Know It’s Over the moment finally caught up with me, and the first tear rolled down my cheek – partly because of the sheer beauty of the song, and partly from the thought that at 66, Morrissey probably won’t be giving many more concerts of this magnitude and intensity. And that is truly sad.
