Dr. Kate Truitt begins by emphasizing that for most people, a “trigger” is connected to a large emotional reaction. Neurobiologically the feeling of being triggered is actually our mind and our body letting us know something’s wrong. Then Dr. Kate describes how our resilience zone is our homeostatic space where our nervous system feels balanced, strong, and good. We can be pushed up outside the zone, where we are in a state of hyperarousal. We can also be pushed down outside the zone, where we are in a state of hypoarousal, or depression. Lastly, we can cycle around the zone, from hyperarousal to hypoarousal. A trigger is a somatic, cognitive, emotional response to being outside of the resilience zone. Our brain and our body are alerting us that something is wrong so we can take action.
