Still, Tim Hortons churned out a line of smoothies this week, saying in a press release that they are a "convenient, affordable snack with a full serving of fruit." Not surprisingly, when I watched a smoothie being made behind the counter at a Tim Hortons, I saw juice being poured from a carton rather than actual pieces of fruit going into my drink. The smoothie also tastes (and smells) teeth-numbingly sweet. Hey, this is what you get for $3.77. Most nutrition experts (including Health Canada) recommend eating actual fruit over drinking fruit juice because there's less sugar, more fibre and eating fruit makes the stomach feel fuller. Looking at Tim Hortons' nutritional info, it shows that a 10-ounce smoothie ($1.99 plus an extra 70 cents for vanilla yogurt) has about 30 grams of sugar. By comparison, a Boston cream donut and a honey cruller have 13 and 23 grams of sugar respectively. The most sugary donut is the strawberry vanilla--filled donut at 28 grams. On the bright side, a smoothie only has 130 to 160 calories (donuts range from 210 to 360 calories) and it probably has more nutrients than a donut. And the Tim Hortons smoothie is nowhere near as bad as the new McDonald's Shamrock Shake. A small shake— about the same size as a Timmies smoothie—has 77 grams of sugar and 530 calories. Bottom line: treat the new smoothies as a snack (as Tim Hortons calls it) but don't replace actual fruit with this sugary concoction.
