Learning collage from a woman who was the REAL animated movie pioneer, and from a top-selling author-illustrator. Plus, we are celebrating Women’s History Month. How does all that come together? This week’s video is in honour of LOTTE REINIGER (1899-1981), German animation artist, film director, inventor, and pioneer. During the lesson we will learn how to create collaged silhouette characters and layered backgrounds by studying the works of animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger and contemporary best-seller author-illustrator Chris Haughton. Her unique style which emphasised gesture, movement, and metamorphosis in her characters, was ideally suited to silhouette art; and this was vastly different from other artists of the 1920s and 1930s who relied on facial expressions to express emotions or action. In 1926, Reiniger created the first avant-garde full-length animation movie. Yes, that’s 10 years before Disney got started. 1970 documentary: • The Art of Lotte Reiniger, 1970 | From the... “A film fantasy by Lotte Reiniger of the adventures of Papageno the jolly bird-catcher from “The Magic Flute”, incorporating original music by Mozart” (1935): • Lotte Reiniger Papageno the jolly birdcatcher CHRIS HAUGHTON (b.1978), Irish author and illustrator of children’s books, that have been published in more than 30 languages, including “A BIT LOST”, “SHH!
